	"With a garland of straw I'll crown thee, Jove, But, if thou wilt harden thy heart, love, I'll marry thee with a rush ring ; ' And he deaf to my pitiful moan, Thy frozen heart shall melt with love, Then I must endure the smart, love, So, merrily I shall sing. And tumble in straw, all alone. Yet still he cried, &c. Yet still he cried, &c. LAY THE BENT TO THE BONNY BROOM. This ballad and tune are contained in the second volume of the early editions of Pills to purge Melancholy, and in the fourth volume of the later. Copies of the ballad are also in the Pepys (iii. 19), Douce (169), and Halli-well Collections (No. 253). It is entitled " A noble riddle wisely expounded; or, The Maid's answer to the Knight's three questions:— She, with her excellent wit and civil carriage, "VYon a young knight to joyn with her in marriage. This gallant couple now are man and wife, And she with him doth lead a pleasant life." " The tune is Lay the bent to the bonny broom."
